Grow your own

1

Enjoy

When your saffron crocus blooms,
first enjoy its fabulous flowers!

2

Pick

When the flower is fully open,
you can carefully pick the red stamens.

3

Dry

You then dry them by placing them in kitchen paper folded double. Leave this parcel to dry in a warm spot, such as near a radiator.

You can also dry the stamens in the oven. Place them on a piece of greaseproof paper, and they will dry in 15 minutes at 50 degrees.

4

Rest

Store them in a sealed pot or bag and leave to ‘rest’ in the dark for a month.

Cook and use

You can then use your
home-grown saffron!

Saffron tips

  • You can plant the bulbs in the garden after flowering (in a sunny spot, in well-draining soil*).
If you’re lucky, you can enjoy the fabulous flowering and taste of your own saffron again next year!
  • The nursery pot can be recycled, and is made of PCR (recycled plastic). You can therefore dispose of it with your plastic waste.
*cover carefully in the event of frost
  • The optimum temperature for saffron to flower is about 17°C
  • Saffron is a 'dry bloomer' and does not need much water. Once a week a saucer of water under the pot is sufficient.
